Nurse Manager*

JOB SUMMARY: The Nurse Manager is responsible for assuring approved standards of care and compliance with established policies and procedures is maintained in the provision of resident care. The Nurse Manager will be primarily responsible for the quality of care on a given unit.


  1. Responsible for the day to day operation and activities of the Nursing Department on her/his assigned unit. Assures that resident care is provided in compliance with all policies and procedures of the facility and with recognized standards of practice.

  2. Effectively communicates resident and unit needs to Nursing Administration

  3. Responsible for assuring the continuity of care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, following up on all identified issues.

  4. Promotes the highest practicable level of physical functioning, psychosocial well being, and quality of life for each resident assigned to her/his care. Utilizes a process of data collection, assessment and care planning to meet the needs of the resident. Facilitates communication and problem solving with other disciplines to develop a plan of care which will address these goals

  5. Oversees the resident assessment process, including the completion of the Minimum Data Set Instrument, Care Area Assessments and Care Plan.

  6. Responsible for assuring the Resident Care Plan is revised as necessary to reflect the current needs of the resident.

  7. Regularly monitors the status of each resident, assuring resident needs and conditions are assessed and appropriate interventions and/or referrals are put in place to meet the resident's needs.

  8. Monitors the environment of her/his assigned unit to assure the safety and comfort of both residents and staff.

  9. Delegates the responsibility for direct resident care to the appropriate nursing staff member. Monitors care to assure care provided as directed by the resident plan of care.

  10. Participates with Nursing Administration in meeting clinical and budget goals.

  11. Evaluates staff assigned to her/his assigned unit to determine staff competencies and/or the need for education. Assists, as appropriate in the education of staff. Participates in the counseling and discipline of staff.

  12. Maintains personal competencies to assure the ability to provide resident care, evaluate the competencies of staff assigned to her/his unit and to serve as a role model for unit staff.

  13. Communicates resident needs, strengths and conditions to appropriate staff members through unit conferences and in written format.

  14. Participates in the development of staff schedules so as to assure adequate staffing on a daily basis.

  15. Participates in process improvement activities.

  16. Participates in the surveillance, prevention and control of infection by implementing infection control policies and procedures.

  17. Serves as a resource person for the development, interpretation, support and implementation of nursing policies and procedures.

  18. Supports activities which improve resident and family satisfaction. Deals effectively, professionally and tactfully with resident and/or family concerns.

  19. Schedules monthly unit meetings, submitting the results of the meeting to the Assistant Director of Nursing


Valid NYS RN License

BSN preferred

Previous long term care supervisory experience required.
