Optical Engineer
Description:
The optical engineering will design, develop and support the introduction of new products from multiple departments including precision glass molded optics Development, Infrared Systems, Fiber Delivery Systems and manufacturing.
Job Functions/Requirements:
Primary job functions are listed below but may change without notice.
o Significant lens design in ZEMAX across multiple product lines and platforms.
o Conduct tolerance and sensitivity analysis of optical designs.
o Assist Sales and Marketing by responding to customers inquires, analyzing customer’s optical systems, and proposing design solutions.
o Provide direct customer support for troubleshooting optical issues with designs.
o Support and operate standard optical equipment to include but not limited to, interferometers, MTF testing, surface profilometry and functional testing.
o Works independently with Manufacturing to address process issues as they occur as well as carrying out long-term process improvements.
o Document performance of designs to initiate lessons learned and facilitate improved production techniques.
o Key contributor in the publication of papers, patents, proposals and conference proceedings.
o Help dictate product planning and innovation.
o Mentor junior engineers in optical design, test and manufacturing.
o Initiate and support true research and development projects to push state of the art glass molding technologies.
o Other tasks as assigned.
Knowledge, Abilities, & Skills required:
• Excellent skills with optical design software such as ZEMAX.
• Strong optical design experience with a base in manufacturing.
• Experience with optical testing methods.
• Excellent understanding that the best optical designs are the ones that can be manufactured cost effectively.
• Desire to be a part of a engaged team that takes significant pride in being the best at what they do.
Requirements:
B.S. +7yrs exp., or M.S. +5yrs. (desirable) or PhD. +3yrs. (Preferred) in Optical Engineering or similar field at an accredited institution.
• Expertise with sequential optical design software with extensive lens design experience. (Zemax, Code V, etc.).
• Hands-on experience in the use of optical test equipment including: interferometers, MTF testing, surface profilometers, beam profile diagnostics, etc.
• Some experience with non-sequential optical design software for stray light analysis.
