Software Development Manager - Kindle Social - Machine Learning, Distributed Systems and Mobile Apps

Kindle Community is seeking a manager to lead a team building a Kindle reading social platform. The platform connects like-minded readers. This team has a broad charter. You will build a selection of machine learning based value-additions, Amazon-scale distributed systems using AWS and custom-technologies, search technologies inter-company workflows, data analytics systems and mobile apps. You will manage a combination of software engineers, testers and program managers. This is a new space and there is a great deal of opportunity for a creative technical and people leader to innovate and drive technical direction. A successful candidate will have an established background in managing teams that develop customer-facing experiences, a strong technical ability, a motivation to achieve results in a fast paced environment, high creativity, and strong analytical reasoning skills.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Work closely with the engineers and product managers to design and develop the best technical solutions to meet business needs.

  • Prepare technical designs to achieve our product vision.

  • Develop services and device software in Java, C++, and some Ruby.

  • Document and present technical solutions to product stakeholders.

  • Manage and execute against project plans and delivery commitments.


Basic Qualifications


  • You will have expertise in distributed system architecture or mobile app development

  • You have a BS or MS in Computer Science or a related degree

  • You have 5+ years of experience in object-oriented design and development experience in one or more of: C++, Java or Ruby.

  • You have 3 + years experience managing development/technical teams.


Preferred Qualifications


  • You have sharp analytical abilities, proven design skills and a track record of delivery

  • You have excellent written communication and verbal agility.

  • You have a passion for intuitive user interface design and powerful user experiences

  • You have experience in applying machine learning techniques to real-world problems.
