Software Development Manager, Personalization

We are seeking an entrepreneurial software development manager who would enjoy leading a high performance team working in an innovative and fast paced environment on high impact projects.

About the team:

Amazon's Similarities team owns innovation for some of Amazon.com’s flagship features, such as "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought", which are used by millions of customers each day to discover new products. The team's datasets are at the core of Amazon's Recommendations engine which personalizes the Amazon.com website based on the unique interests of each customer.

We build systems to harness the collective intelligence found in the billions of interactions that happen on our global family of websites. Our algorithms seek out the most useful aggregate patterns amongst an enormous sea of noise. These patterns are then made available to the shopping customer who benefits from the learnings of millions of customers who came before them. Our features delight customers across Amazon’s entire selection from eBooks to table saws to Amazon Instant Video, for which the team shared a 2013 technical Emmy award.

Our systems operate at massive scale. Our data mining algorithms are able to process billions of transactions made by hundreds of millions of customers on a catalog with hundreds of millions of items. The online services which vend our data get billions of queries per day. And yet, despite this scale, we’re able to move fast -- we can have an idea in the morning and have it live in front of customers by the end of the day.

About you:

You're looking for a role where you can lead an innovative team inventing the future of product discovery. You love building teams, growing and mentoring engineers, and you know how to create a collaborative team environment that rewards intelligent risk taking. You have hands-on experience designing, delivering, and owning successful products at scale. You enjoy getting computers to make intelligent decisions in the face of real-world noisy data. You challenge yourself and others to constantly come up with better solutions. You're a thought leader and you've demonstrated this by building solutions, not just by having ideas. You want to create value and make a real impact to the delight of hundreds of millions of people worldwide.
