Regional Director of Operations / NHA

Extendicare Health Services is currently interviewing for a Regional Director of Operations. This position will direct our locations located in Michigan - Lansing (2), Cass City, Clare, Frankenmuth, Midland, Mt. Pleasant, OKemos, and Taylor. The Regional Director of Operations (RDO) will accomplish the company's goals and objectives by holding administrators under their direction accountable for census growth, resident care, state and federal surveys, positive employee relations, a defined return on investment, an effective business plan, and implementation of Extendicare programs and philosophy. The RDO must be strong in planning and control so s/he can manage daily issues without interfering with the ability to anticipate future business trends and plan accordingly. The RDO will hold administrators accountable and will work to develop administrators so they achieve personal and professional growth. Additionally, the RDO will conduct a facility department head operations meeting approximately every 4-6 weeks, reviewing the status of the goals and objectives of the facility.


Directly oversees Nursing Home Administrators within a designated region.


  • Responsible for a designated region of approximately 5 – 9 Health Centers.

  • Recommends the hiring/terminations of Administrators and Directors of Nursing

  • Has signature authority up to $500

  • Recommends facility staffing changes (Dollars and Hours) to Area Vice President (AVP)

  • Recommends facility wage grid amounts



  • Under the direction of the AVP, and with the administrator, communicates the appropriate Census and Mix objectives for the year, in conjunction with the budget and the business plan

  • Ensures that facility has a sales and marketing plan in place that will allow facility to maximize census and exceed expectations

  • Reviews the status daily via daily census report and each month on site and ensures that goals are established if results are not meeting expectations


Ensures facility programs achieve compliance expectations as measured by facility QI trends and internal company surveys. Ensures an effective CQI process is in place for all facilities to identify and resolve facility problems. Evaluates each facility's CQI program at least monthly

Accounts Receivable

Monitors reports to ensure accounts receivable are maintained at an acceptable level.

Ensures administrators monitor ATB and hold business office managers accountable for proper procedures that will ensure minimal A/R. Reviews the status each month with the administrator and the business office manager on site and ensures that goals are established if results are not meeting expectations.

Net Operating Income

Conducts monthly budget review to include the Spend Down process. Monitors labor and supply expense PPDs to ensure appropriate financial controls are in place and to ensure facilities are adjusting to census fluctuations. Monitors Ancillary supplies to ensure that proper controls are in place. Ensures each facility maximizes ancillary revenue opportunities. Ensures that facility is utilizing Health Tracker and appropriately managing clinical reimbursement process

Reviews the status each month on site and ensures that goals are established if results are not meeting expectations

Human Resources

Ensures facilities have recruitment and retention programs in place that will allow the facility to operate without contract labor. Tracks and evaluates facility turnover, ensuring that the facility develops plans to address turnover. Reviews Sprains and Strains; develops plans. Reviews the status of staffing each pay period, and does a monthly on-site review. Ensures that goals are established if status is not meeting expectations. Interviews and recommends to the AVP for hire the positions of Administrator and Director of Nursing In conjunction with the RDO interviews and recommends Administrator and DON candidates for hire.

Administrator Development

Ensures newly hired administrators receive a proper orientation. The new administrator will attend Extendicare University. Annually assist the Area Team in establishing objectives for each administrator. Conducts annual Performance Reviews and quarterly reviews on administrators and ensures administrator does the same for department heads.

Education: Bachelor’s degree. Licensed as a Nursing Home Administrator or eligible for licensure by the state in which the health centers are located.

Experience: Minimum of five (5) years progressively responsible management and staff development experience in long-term care. At least 2 years experience as a licensed Nursing Home Administrator.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Ability to relate positively, effectively, and appropriately with residents, families, community members, volunteers, and other facility staff. Possess special interest in working with long-term care residents and the elderly. Strong oral and written communication skills.
